For the third time, approximately 30 experts from academia and industry met within the "Network Industrial Image Processing OWL". The meeting was hosted by Wincor Nixdorf International in Paderborn. This time, the focus of interest was on intelligent applications in image processing using new technologies with the objective to make image processing suitable for end-users through these new technologies.

Prof. Dr.-ing. Volker Lohweg of the Institut Industrial IT (inIT) at the University OWL and his colleague Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bärbel Mertsching of the University of Paderborn are the initiators of the network Industrial Image Processing OWL. Through joint projects, they want to make academic knowledge on industrial image processing more accessible to small and medium-sized as well as large businesses. Volker Lohweg: "An open network of industry and academia."

The cooperation of the universities in Paderborn and Lemgo in this field has been exemplary. Bärbel Mertsching is head of the GET Lab - Cognitive Systems Engineering at the University of Paderborn. Volker Lohweg is a member of the inIT leadership team,the research institute of the Electrical engineering and Computer Engineering Department at the University Ostwestfalen-Lippe.

During this third seminar, Reinhard Rabenstein, Senior Vice President & CTO, member of the executive board, banking division, strategic sales, pointed out the importance of industrial image processing for Wincor Nixdorf using several examples from the fields of automatic teller machines, reverse vending machines and computerized cash registers.

Next, Dr. Reiner Seitz, technical director of Wincor Nixdorf Technology GmbH in Ilmenau explained image processing techniques of reverse vending machines. Advantages and disadvantages of various digital interfaces and bus systems in image transmission were described by Dr. Reinhard Borst, technical director of the ELTEC Elektronik AG in Mainz.

Finally, Prof. Dr. Lohweg introduced the events planned for 2010: "solutions - OWL Forum for Technology and Innovation: Image Processing - quo vadis? Current trends in image processing and pattern recognition for intelligent systems in automation" as well as the "Annual colloquium Image Processing in Automation (BVAu 2010)".

He invited the network-participants to submit articles for the annual colloquium which will be held at the new Centrum Industrial IT (CIT) on the Lemgo campus.
