On Wednesday, Oct. 17 2007, at 4:30 pm in P1.4.17 Frank Hagenlüke will present his seminar paper titled:

Determination of the probability of bonding of directional contour elements under consideration of the polarity of orientation-selective filter responses

Summary:

Virtual contours or illusory contours are contours which are perceived in spite of a missing projection at the receptor level of a visual system. Neurological investigations have shown that the perception of illusory contours shows an unalterable mechanism to the spatial interpretation of a three-dimensional scene. If such a mechanism is copied on a technical system, junction points, e.g., corners, and the orientations of the edges linked with these points have to be evaluated. In early works of the GET-Lab, the smooth approximation of the connection of two contour elements was realized by Spline-functions. Also a function was invented to rate the connection probability in dependence of the position and the orientations of the junction points. The purpose of this work is to optimize the above named function, with special regard to colour or grey values in the neighbourhood of junction points. The polarity of orientation-selective filter responses in the neighbourhood of junctions shows an explanation criterion.
