GETbot on second place at the RoboCup German Open 2009

Datum: 2009/05/07

The 8th RoboCup German Open in conjunction with the exhibit "Mobile Robots & Autonomous Systems" took place from April 20 - 24, 2009 at the Hannover Fair. 48 teams from 11 countries competed in different leagues.

The GET Lab team with its robot "GETbot" lined up again this year in the rescue robot league. Finishing third last year, the team reached second place of six teams in this league. Prof. Mertsching is pleased: "We were beat only by the team of the University Koblenz-Landau this year." Again the rules were tightened and a lot of on-site work was necessary to prepare the robot for the new conditions. "Not everyone managed to adapt to the new conditions in time. Last year's winning team of the Jacobs University Bremen didn't even make to the start", explains Henrik Vassmer, a student at the GET Lab who participated last year as well.

For the rescue league, a reproduced disaster scenario is set up in an arena, e.g. a situation after a natural catastrophe. The autonomous and remote-controlled rescue robots have to locate hidden victims using their numerous sensors such as laser scanners, thermal cameras and microphones. This year, GET Lab had put its focus on developing an evaluation process for heat images. In cooperation with the workgroup communication engineering a system for acoustic localization was successfully implented in the GETbot.
