f.l.t.r. Technical Programme Committee Chair and Keynote-Speaker: Prof. Dr. Bärbel Mertsching, GET Lab, Paderborn; Oliver Menken, VRMagic, Mannheim (Keynote); Prof. Dr. Karl Schaschek, Hochschule für Medien, Stuttgart; Jens Deppermann, VR Magic, Mannheim (Keynote); Jan Leif Hoffmann, inIT, Lemgo; Uwe Mönks, inIT, Lemgo; Dr. Steffen Priesterjahn, Wincor Nixdorf, Paderborn; Norbert Eßer, ELTEC, Mainz (Keynote); Prof. Dr. Volker Lohweg, inIT, Lemgo.

Specialists from all over Germany met in Lemgo on the 19th of November 2014 to present and get to know current developments in the field of industrial image processing. Already for the fourth time the Annual Research Colloquium “Image processing in Automation” took place at CENTRUM INDUSTRIAL IT (CIIT) in Lemgo. The colloquium is alternately organized by Institute Industrial IT (inIT) of OWL-University and GET Lab of Paderborn University. With about 45 participants the colloquium was again very well attended. The event took place within the framework “Industrial Image Processing OWL” of the leading-edge cluster “it’s OWL – Intelligente Technische Systeme Ostwestfalen-Lippe” and was an event of the network “Industrielle Bildverarbeitung – OWL”.

The colloquium devoted to technical aspects of machine vision systems, algorithmic approaches, and practical applications of image processing techniques. ". In particular, in relation to industry-4.0-aspects,the machine vision is considered as a key technology faces new challenges to be overcome in the coming years," Prof. Dr. Volker Lohweg, board member of inIT, added, "These include: cost-effective systems that are suitable for mass production; rapid adaptability in any system; and smart and powerful cameras."

The first keynote, which was held at the beginning of the event by Oliver Menken by the company VRmagic from Mannheim, went under the theme of "high-performance image processing in field bus systems" to the challenges of an incurred by the use of vision systems in industrial environments. A second keynote was followed in the afternoon. Norbert Esser of the ELTEC Elektronik AG, from Mainz present a talk under the title - "HiPerCam Ruggedized Intelligent Camera for mobile and industrial applications" a tailor-made industrial camera, which is also designed in harsh environments for current and future image processing applications.

Prof. Dr. Bärbel Mertsching finally invited to BVAu 2015, Paderborn, which will be held on 18.11.2015. Mertsching commented: "Interdisciplinary Approaches in Engineering, Biology and Psychology enable new trendsetting solutions. The increased use of image processing technologies provides new opportunities without compromising performance. At the same time, new challenges arise that the industry has to overcome."
